TUDOR SUBMARINER 79090
WHY THIS WATCH - FULLY SERVICED, NEAR MINT CONDITION, ORIGINAL BOX
THINGS TO MENTION - NO ORIGINAL PAPERS
The Tudor Submariner began its life just one year after the Rolex Submariner in 1954, with the introduction of the 7922. A 37mm wide oyster case with no crown guards, matte dial with a rose logo and high grade generic movement that was more affordable than what its big sister Rolex all came together to form the foundation of what was a very successful line for Tudor. Arguably the pinnacle of the Tudor Sub range were the snowflake models - mainly the 9401 and 9411. The 76100 began the realignment of the Submariner with the aesthetic of big sister Rolex following the 9411 and 9401. After a short production run of the 76100 in the 80's the virtually identical 79090 was released. It also ran for an equally short period of time from '89 to the mid-90's. Given the short production runs of both models the number change may seem pointless on the surface but Tudor felt the need for it to coincide with the reference numbering system change from numeric to alphanumeric. The 79090 was the last Tudor Submariner to be offered solely with a matte dial, plexi-crystal and Navy or Black dial and bezel option. The final iteration of the Submariner followed in the 79190, which introduced a sapphire crystal and later a gloss dial with applied markers. You can be hard pushed to find 'investment' Tudor's but the Submariner is without doubt THE investment Tudor.
This example is presented on the original folded link oyster bracelet, with all elements of both the watch and strap in near mint condition. The case is thick and still possesses lovely chamfered edged on the lugs. The dial, hands and bezel pip have the early signs of patina, all with an off-white colour. The ETA 2824-2 movement has been fully serviced prior to sale. There is no original paperwork, however the original box is included along with previous 2020 service papers and a vintage Rolex/Tudor polishing cloth.
